Estonia’s ex-minister of Azerbaijani descent to run for mayor of Narva

The former minister of population affairs of Estonia and vice-president of the Congress of European Azerbaijanis, Eldar Efendiyev, who is of Azerbaijani descent, has put forward his candidacy for the post of mayor of the Estonian city of Narva.

Efendiyev’s candidacy has already been registered, Sahil Gasimov, president of the Congress of European Azerbaijanis told APA.

The elections are scheduled for October 15.

Eldar Efendiyev, who is originally from the Azerbaijani city of Sheki, was born in Estonia in 1954. He graduated from Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute (present St. Petersburg).

In 1997, Efendiyev become a member of the Centre Party, one of the leading parties of Estonia. He served as the mayor of Narva city in 1999-2000.

In 2002-2003, Efendiyev worked as the minister of population affairs of Estonia. He was a deputy of the 10th and 11th convocations of the Estonian Parliament. He also headed the Azerbaijani-Estonian interparliamentary working group.

Efendiyev is a co-founder of the Tallin-based “Bakili” club.
