Prosecutor seeks 12-year sentence for man accused of planning terror attacks in Azerbaijani universities

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes continued on Wednesday the trial on the case of Farid Sadigov who is accused of terrorism and other crimes, APA reported.

A state prosecutor made a speech at the trial presided over by judge Rahib Salmanov.

The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the defendant to 12 years in prison.

The trial will be resumed on Oct. 6.

The indictment says that Farid Sadigov, nicknamed “Abdulhalid”, maintained contacts with Garib Damirov, Muhammad Ulubekov and other persons for the purpose of spreading the ideas of Islamic State terrorist organization in Azerbaijan. The criminal group members planned to create a panic among the population, having committed terrorist attacks in Baku State University, Baku Islam University and Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University. They also planned to attack wine shops and pawnshops located in the country’s northern part.

The criminals were killed in an operation conducted by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan. Farid Sadigov was subsequently arrested. He is charged under articles 218.1 (being a member of a criminal group), 214 (terrorism) and other relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
