In recent years, there have been no recorded cases of harm to minors at religious ceremonies in Azerbaijan, Elgun Safarov, an official of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, told APA on Monday.

He was commenting on reports of the participation of young children in Ashura commemorations held in Azerbaijan yesterday.

According to him, within the framework of the principle of human rights protection – in accordance with either the Constitution or the international convention, family members of Azerbaijani citizens are allowed to participate in religious ceremonies and their rights are protected.

He noted that children are permitted to participate in religious ceremonies if their rights are not violated and there is no fact of evasion from education and health damage. “However, acts of health damage and bloodshed are unacceptable, and this is a gross violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” Safarov added.
