Holding international competitions in Azerbaijan has already become a tradition, said President of Azerbaijan, President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev.
The president made the remarks at a solemn ceremony marking the 25th jubilee of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee (NOC), APA reported.
"We take an active part in the international arena within the International Olympic Committee and the European Olympic Committees. We have very good relations with international federations. It is no coincidence that several prestigious competitions are held in Azerbaijan every year,” he said.
He noted that the 2017 Women's European Volleyball Championship is currently being held in Baku.
“Holding international competitions in Azerbaijan has already become a tradition. We have got used to it, and this, of course, shows the potential of Azerbaijan, the confidence in us of international federations,” said President Aliyev.
“Today’s ceremony has special significance for me, since I’ve been heading the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee for 20 years already. The sports community of Azerbaijan rendered me this trust in 1997. Six years later, I was elected president of Azerbaijan. Of course, my responsibility has greatly increased. However, as the NOC president, I’m trying to pay attention to all issues related to sports development. I’m interested in problems of athletes. I’ve devoted twenty years of my life to the Olympic Movement and sport,” he added.
