Vusal Isayev, head of the legal services section of the department for work with law-enforcement bodies at Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration, has commented on the views of the representatives of the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the newly proposed amendments to the Criminal Code that envisage decriminalization for the use and possession of drugs in the country.

Addressing a public hearing at the Azerbaijani Parliament on Friday, Isayev said that the opinion of law enforcement bodies regarding the decriminalization of Article 234.1 (illegal purchase or storage without a purpose of selling of narcotics or psychotropic substances in a quantity (amount) exceeding necessary for personal consumption) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan was taken into account. He noted that the position was unambiguous here.

According to him, the approval of these amendments can lead to an increase in drug-related crimes.

“The decriminalization of this sentence in other countries has not yet proved to be effective. For this reason, the amendments were considered unacceptable at this stage,” he added.
