Life-term prisoners who have served 25 years of their sentences can get their sentences reduced to 19 years of imprisonment.

In this regard, an amendment has been proposed by Azerbaijan’s president to be made to Item 4 of Article â„– 57 (life imprisonment) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, APA reported.

According to the draft amendments, if a lifelong inmate has served 25 years of his/her sentence, didn’t commit a deliberate crime during his sentence and there is no need for the inmate to serve that sentence anymore, the life imprisonment can be replaced by 10 years of imprisonment.

Currently, this period is 15 years.

The draft amendments will be tabled in parliament after public hearings in the coming days.
