A total of 151 people have been stripped of their Azerbaijani citizenship in the past year for fighting in the ranks of terrorist organizations, said State Security Service Deputy Head Ilgar Musayev.
He made the remarks while addressing the forum of youth of the occupied and frontline areas entitled "Always ready to defend the Motherland" in Guzanli settlement of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district Sept. 12.
“Military and political confrontations going on around the world and the bitter consequences of terrorist activities do affect our country as well, regardless of distances,” said Musayev.
He noted that these include factors such as growing trends towards religious radicalism and spread of terrorist and extremist activities in the name of religion.
“Unfortunately, some Azerbaijani citizens, most of whom are young, have joined the ranks of terrorist organizations operating in Syria and Iraq under the influence of radical and extremist propaganda,” said Musayev, adding. “According to information, most of them have been killed on the battlefield. Eighty-two people who joined terrorist organizations have been arrested upon their return to Azerbaijan. According to the law on citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a total of 151 people have been stripped of their Azerbaijani citizenship in the past year for fighting for terrorist organizations.”
