Monument to military figures of Azerbaijani Democratic Republic unveiled in Warsaw

Azerbaijan’s Defense Minister, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, who is on a visit to Poland, took part on Thursday an unveiling ceremony of the monument erected in Warsaw in memory of the military figures of the period of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, Lieutenant-General Suleyman Bey Sulkevich and Colonel Veli Bey Yadigar, the Defense Ministry told APA.

The ceremony was also attended by officials of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Poland, the leadership of the Polish Armed Forces, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Institute of National Remembrance, the Parliament of Poland, veterans' organization, the administration of Warsaw city, representatives of the public, as well as members of the Azerbaijani Diaspora.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Hasanov hailed the close historical relations between Poland and Azerbaijan. He expressed confidence that today’s event, which is symbolic, will play an important role in the development of military cooperation between the two countries.

Speakers at the event talked about the significant work done by Lieutenant-General Suleyman Bey Sulkevich (Maciej Alexandrovich Sulkevich) in the creation of national military units and the country's defense system for the period of being the chief of the General Staff of the Army of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic.

The participants of the ceremony were informed about the emigration of the army officer of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic, Colonel Veli Bey Jadigar to Poland after the occupation of Azerbaijan in 1920, as well as his service as the chief of staff of the Mazowiecka Cavalry Brigade and participation in the uprising in Warsaw as the commander of the regiment of the Home Army, and other interesting facts.
