Road accidents leave 16 people dead in Iran in one day

Sixteen people died and 16 others were injured in three road accidents that took place in Iran on Sept. 7, APA’s Tehran correspondent reported.

One of the accidents occurred in the city of Iranshahr, Sistan and Baluchestan province. Nine members of one family were hit by a Pegaut while they were getting off a bus. Eight of them died at the scene, one was seriously injured. Though the driver ran away from the scene, the police managed to detain him several hours later.

Five more people died after a Pegaut collided with a truck in the city of Saveh.

In addition, a truck collided with a passenger bus on the Bojnourd highway, leaving 3 people dead and 15 others injured.

Iran is one of the counties with the highest rates of road accidents.

Iran’s Health Ministry reports that the number of people injured in road accidents in the country has increased five-fold over the last two weeks. Every 30 minutes, one person becomes a victim of a road accident in Iran.

Last week, 10 schoolchildren died and 35 others were injured after a school bus overturned in the Iranian province of Fars. This accident triggered protests in the country. President Hassan Rouhani ordered to investigate the causes of the accident and punish the persons found guilty.
