Diplomas of nearly 900 Azerbaijani citizens who had studied abroad were not recognized, Samir Valiyev, head of the Department of Accreditation and Nostrification of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Education, told APA.

According to Valiyev, more than 3,000 citizens applied for nostrification (the procedure for recognizing higher education specialties of foreign countries and determining their equivalence) during one year period of the functioning of the department.

“Nearly 33% of the appeals were denied and diplomas of these citizens were not recognized. It means that diplomas of about 900 citizens remained unrecognized,” he said.

Valiyev went on to say that the reasons for the refusal are ignorance of the language of instruction, lack of information about their specialty, refusals based on information on the crossing of the state border, inconsistency among the specialties and others. Diplomas of more than 60% individuals who successfully graduated from universities have been recognized in the country.

The department head stressed that as long as the quality increases at Azerbaijani universities, the flow to foreign countries will increase. “However, our citizens should understand that foreign countries should be alternative mainly for different and good education. Getting education abroad in order to get diploma only can cause obstacles in recognition of diplomas. Selection of important spheres of high priority for the country means future employment and mastering a necessary profession,” he added.
