No society, no family should suffer from the loss of children as a result of an armed conflict, said Cornelius Williams, Associate Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The UNICEF associate director made this statement in his response to Azerbaijan’s human rights commissioner’s statement on the murder of two-year-old Azerbaijani girl Zahra Guliyeva as a result of Armenian shelling.

On July 4, around 20:40, Armenian armed forces shelled the Alkhanli village of Azerbaijan’s Fuzuli district, using 82mm- and 120-mm-caliber mortars, including heavy grenade launchers.

As a result of this provocation, villager Sahiba Guliyeva (1967) and her granddaughter Zahra Guliyeva (2015) died, Sarvinaz Guliyeva was wounded.

The letter says that as noted by the UN Secretary General in March, the organization calls on the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to refrain from any actions that can undermine the ceasefire and to demonstrate resoluteness for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“UNICEF hopes that the security of all children affected by the conflict will be ensured at a time when efforts are being made to find a solution,” reads the letter.

The UNICEF Azerbaijan representation will do everything possible to help provide the security of children and young people, according to the letter.
