EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will convene an extraordinary meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee on August 14 to discuss the latest developments in the situation on the Korean peninsula, a statement released by the European External Action Service (EEAS) said Friday, APA reports quoting sputniknews.

The tensions around North Korea have been high for some time due to Pyongyang's missile and nuclear program. The most recent escalation was prompted by sanctions against North Korea approved by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last week in response to July's launches of ballistic missiles by Pyongyang.

"Following her talks in Manila, in the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum… the High Representative and Vice President Federica Mogherini has decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Political and Security Committee on Monday 14 August to discuss possible next steps on the situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," the statement said.

Pyongyang promised to retaliate against the United States, which led to US President Donald Trump warning on Tuesday that Washington would respond with "fire and fury" to any possible threats. In response, Pyongyang said it was considering an attack near the Pacific island of Guam where several US military bases are located.
