2015 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Professor of the U.S’s University of North Carolina Aziz Sancar made the remarks at a conference at Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC) which was dedicated to his activities, APA reports.

He said that the fact that he won the Nobel Prize caused to great interest in Azerbaijan, along with Turkey: “The entire Turkic world from Kazakhstan to Kosovo was pleased. Even, the Azerbaijani ambassador to Washington called and congratulated me.”

According to Sanjar, he received a call from Sweden around 5:00AM on the same day he was given the prize.

“My spouse answered the call and they wanted to speak to me. She told them that I was asleep and that she could let me know later if they had to say something important. They even had a row. The caller said he could not tell her what he had to say to me. At last, they stated the result officially. It was a week-long, tiring procedure before I got the prize,” he said.

Sancar went on to recount another interesting experience he had.

“A woman came to the university along with her son seeking to consult me. I informed them about a few scientific researches I was working on. The boy got surprised and asked, ‘Is that all?’ I said, ‘Son, I’ve been working on it for 40 years. Having heard that, the boy never came back to our university,” he said.
