Azerbaijani SBS, Prosecutor General’s Office release statement on journalist Afgan Mukhtarli’s arrest

Azerbaijan’s State Border Service (SBS) and the Prosecutor General’s Office have issued a joint statement on journalist Afgan Mukhtarli’s arrest.

According to the statement, at 22:40 May 29, Azerbaijani citizen Afgan Mukhtarli without his national ID card on him attempted to flee after illegally crossing from Georgia to Azerbaijan away from the nearest border checkpoint. He was detained by border guards after refusing to obey their legal demand and showing them resistance, APA reported.

During the inspection, border guards found 10,000 euros on him, as well as a Bank of Georgia express plastic card and other items.

Afgan Mukhtarli was detained as a suspect on May 30. He is charged under Articles 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Azerbaijan Republic) and 206.1 (smuggling) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

On May 31, Afgan Mukhtarli was sentenced to pretrial detention on charges under Articles 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Azerbaijan Republic), 206.1 (smuggling) and 315.2 (resistance to or violence against public officials) of the Criminal Code.
