The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games came to an end in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on May 22.

Athletes from 40 countries vied for 268 sets of medals within 11 days. They grabbed a total of 886 medals, including 269 gold, 267 silver and 350 bronze medals. The teams of 14 countries participating in the Games will return home empty-handed, APASport reported.

Azerbaijani athletes took the lead in medal standings with 162 medals, setting a record with 75 gold medals in the history of the Islamic Solidarity Games. The Azerbaijani team lagged behind Turkey for the total number of medals, but it became the winner of the Baku 2017 for the number of gold medals. Azerbaijan triumphed in such a multisport event for the first time as its best achievement was the second place at the first European Games in 2015.

Moreover, the Azerbaijan team continued the tradition of the Islamic Solidarity Games. Thus, the winners of the Games were host countries – Saudi Arabia in 2005, and Indonesia in 2013.

Azerbaijan was followed by Turkey (195 medals) and Iran (98 medals). The Turkish team also set a record with 195 medals in the history of the Games.
