A media seminar on neutralizing land degradation in the South Caucasus kicked off in Tbilisi, Georgia on May 2.

Journalists from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia are taking part in the seminar co-organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), APA reported.

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia Ekaterine Grigalava spoke about the importance of preventing land degradation and the role of the media in this respect.

German Ambassador to Georgia Daniel Hass said that the seminar mainly aims to exchange information on the degraded lands in the South Caucasus and inform the public in this regard. “Where there is land degradation, there are climate change and loss of biodiversity. Unfortunately, at present, not enough attention is given to this problem”, said the ambassador.

GIZ Program Director Hans-Joachim Lipp highlighted the important role of media in protecting environment.

“First of all, we need to seek ways to save nature for future generations. The conservation of nature and environment means protection of human health. We must also support each other in this area and take important steps. I believe that the issues to be discussed at the seminar will contribute to this sphere,” he added.
