The Russian community of Azerbaijan is seriously concerned over a possible liquidation of the All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress, said Mikhail Zabelin, Azerbaijani MP, head of the Russian community of Azerbaijan.

He made the remarks at the parliament’s plenary session on Friday.

The MP said the Russian community functions quite freely and actively in Azerbaijan, noting that 16,000 students receive higher education here in Russian.

Zabelin stressed that the All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress operates in accordance with Russia’s laws.

“Last week I contacted some deputies of the Russian State Duma. We are deeply concerned over this issue,” he added.

The MP expressed hope that the court will not rule the liquidation of the All-Russian Azerbaijani Congress.

Commenting on the issue, Speaker Ogtay Asadov noted that Azerbaijan is home to the largest Russian community in the South Caucasus.

“Mr Zabelin, please do write a letter to the Russian Ministry of Justice. We must not allow evil forces to triumph over good ones,” he said.

Zabelin, in his turn, reminded that the letter has already been prepared, saying he hopes it will be taken into account.
