About one-seventh of the prisoners in Azerbaijan are charged with drug-related crimes (Article 234), Chairman of the Criminal Board of the Supreme Court Shahin Yusifov said at the meeting of the Union of Association of Court Judges, APA reported.

He said that judges need to be very careful about these issues.

“One of the worst problems has to do with Article 234.1 of the Criminal Code. Today, about one-seventh of the prisoners in Azerbaijan are charged under this article. Three days ago, 65 prisoners appealed to us. They had probably heard of the president’s decrees and realized that he intends to create better conditions for prisoners. They seek help to regain their freedom. Some of them say they were falsely imprisoned. I’m asking our judges to pay special attention to this issue so that no one gets imprisoned illegally. These cares have decreased compared to the past. There are more acquittals now. We appreciate it. But not always are judges brave enough. They must avoid issuing illegal verdicts,” he said.
