The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) project is of strategic importance for the European Union, said Maros Sefcovic, European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union.

“We all do understand how important the [SGC] is for Europe,” said Sefcovic, addressing the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Third Ministerial Meeting in Baku Feb. 23, APA reported.

Sefcovic called on European financial organizations to pay attention to this project, which is of strategic importance to the continent’s future.

The European Commission VP expressed his confidence that the project will be implemented in a timely manner.

Expressing his gratitude to Azerbaijan for hosting this meeting at the third time, Sefcovic said a lot of progress on the project has been made since last year’s meeting.

He stressed the importance of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s recent visit to Brussels.

“A framework agreement on cooperation was signed between the EU and Azerbaijan, and fruitful discussions on energy security were held during President Aliyev’s visit to Brussels,” added Sefcovic.
