Thalassemia-related deaths have reduced fivefold in Azerbaijan over the last decade, the Health Ministry’s press service told APA on Saturday.

Over 2,800 patients are currently receiving treatment in the Republican Thalassemia Center, according to the ministry.

To date, 42 children–-30 patients with thalassemia and oncohematology patients–- have undergone bone marrow transplantation (radical method of treatment of hereditary blood diseases) in the Republican Thalassemia Center. The youngest of the patients was 2 years old, the ministry said.

In Azerbaijan, hemophilia-related deaths (1,541 registered patients with hemophilia in the country) have significantly decreased thanks to the improvement of medical care provided to patients with hemophilia and sustainable provision of necessary medical products with the state program.
