Baku – APA. The statement of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the true goal of Ankara’s steps in Syria came as a surprise and the Kremlin seeks explanations, TASS cited Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying on Wednesday.

"No doubt, we hope that in the near future there will be explanations on this from our Turkish partners," Peskov told reporters.

The Turkish president did not mention any plans to send troops to Syria during his recent telephone conversations with Vladimir Putin, Peskov stressed.

When asked if Erdogan’s intentions had been clear judging from the tone and topics of the conversations, the Kremlin spokesman said that "it is not a matter of intentions, however, Erdogan did not make any such statements during his contacts with our president."

In a speech on Tuesday, Erdogan condemned what he said was the failure of the United Nations in Syria and cast Turkey's incursion in August, when it sent tanks, fighter jets and special forces over the border, as an act of exasperation.

"We are there to bring justice. We are there to end the rule of the cruel Assad, who has been spreading state terror," Erdogan said.
