Nursists detained in Azerbaijan transferred to minimum security facility

Baku. Shahriyar Alizade – APA. Two Nursists – Eldaniz Hajiyev and Ismail Mammadov, who were kept in the jail No.14, filed a petition to commute the type of correctional institution.

The court upheld their petition, transferring them to a minimum security facility.

In April 2013, law enforcement agencies raided a house situated at Khidir Mustafayev str., Baku, detaining 41 Nursists who had gathered therein. Banned religious books as well as audio and video materials promoting the Nur movement were found and seized from their house. Yasamal district court sentenced Eldaniz Hajiyev, Ismayil Mammadov, his brother Zakariyya Mammadov, Shahin Hasanov, each of them to 5-year imprisonment, Ravan Farzaliyev to 2-year imprisonment. They were released in courtroom.

They are charged with encroachment of citizens’ rights on pretext of commitment of religious activities.

The accused persons appealed to the Baku Court of Appeal. The court partially sustained their appeal. According to the court’s decision, the prison term of Ismayil Mammadov and Eldaniz Hajiyev was reduced to two year six months, and the other three persons were released in courtroom. Their punishment was considered conditional.
