The purpose of the monitoring was to verify the authenticity of some information revealed by representatives of civil society to the commissioner regarding the detention conditions of Leyla Yunus and treatment toward her, the press service of the Ombudsman’s Apparatus told APA.

The representatives said the cell, where Leyla Yunus is being kept, was inspected and they had private meetings with the other 5 women kept with her.

The monitoring revealed the detention conditions meet the standards, with 4.3 square meters per person (excluding the sanitary), sanitary rules are complied with, and the yard belonging to the cell is open from 10:00 to 17:00, for the rest of the day opening windows for the ventilation of the room.

The detainees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not complain about their detention conditions and treatment. One of the detainees, N.H., objected to mass media outlets for mentioning her name and presenting her as a person of negative characteristics, stressing it’s inadmissible and that she doesn’t smoke at all.

Leyla Yunus and 3 of her cellmates said they are not bothered by the other 2 smoking.

They also said, although acknowledging the existence of some kind of resentment between Leyla Yunus and N.H., they have not seen one of the two cause injury to the other.

While investigating the issue raised in regard with Leyla Yunus being kept together with a previously imprisoned woman, the investigators discovered that a temporary hardship had come about in relocation due to ongoing repairs in one of the buildings of the investigation isolator.

The Ministry of Justice will be informed about the results of the investigation.
