Baku. Ali Ahmadov – APA-Economics. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNİCEF) and Azersun Holding signed a memorandum of cooperation today to support the efforts of the Azerbaijani government to reduce child disability.

The document was signed by the UNÄ°CEF representative in Azerbaijan, Mark Hereward and CEO of Azersun Holding, Ahmet Yema.

The post-Soviet Azerbaijan is the first country where such kind of the document has been signed, Hereward said during the ceremony.

"We hope that Azersun will be our long term partner in our efforts to improve the welfare of children in the country," Hereward said.

He also noted that those with disabilities are the most vulnerable group in Azerbaijan. There were 24 disabled people per 1000 according to the statistics for 2009. This means the number of people with disabilities is about 60,000.

The memorandum between UNÄ°CEF and Azersun Holding is for one year. Azersun will allocate 25,000 manat towards the partnership and denote the UNÄ°CEF logo on its letter heading and promotional material to attract the attention of their customers to this problem.

Hereward said future plans of cooperation between UNÄ°CEF and Azersun Holding includes the opening of medical centers and providing them with necessary equipment where those with disabilities will be able to receive treatment, as well as help from other projects.
