Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloglu – APA. The reason behind the Venice Commission’s negative opinion about the draft law “On defamation” submitted by Azerbaijan is unclear, said Ali Huseynli, Azerbaijani MP, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on law policy and state building.

He made the remarks at the session “Defamation and libel: Review of Azerbaijan’s relevant legislation” held in Baku May 31 within the framework of the EU/CoE project on freedom of expression and media freedom.

“At that time, three countries adopted the law on defamation. Most of European countries, including France, did not adopt this law,” he stressed

Huseynli said the essence of the law on defamation was about not decriminalizing articles 147 and 148 of the Criminal Code.

“We did not change our position. We have not been against the adoption of the law. Our only position was that it had to be carried out without decriminalizing the Criminal Code,” he added.
