During the last decade, 42% of investments in Azerbaijan and 35% of investments in non-oil sector was made by EU countries, said Sahil Babayev, Deputy Minister of Economy at a press conference on the EU project "Support to Institution Building Activities in Azerbaijan” in Baku May 27.
According to him, Azerbaijan and the EU have close cooperation: “Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, main oil project of Azerbaijan, is aimed at delivery of Azerbaijani oil to European market. At the same time, we are cooperating in natural gas sale. We may point out the Southern Gas Corridor”.
Babayev went on saying that EU’s technical aid and grants to Azerbaijan exceeded €582 million: “For example, we may not twinning project. 43 twinning projects have been implemented in Azerbaijan so far, of which 25 were completed successfully, 9 are being implemented, 9 waiting for preparation of documents. Total of 150 TAIEZ events have been held with the initiative of state bodies. Along with this, representatives of the state bodies participated in 68 TAIEX events. 15 SIGMA projects have been implemented, 2 SOICIEUX projects are being implemented”.
Malena Mard, head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, said there is a potential to increase the cooperation. According to her, Azerbaijan and the EU enjoy strong cooperation in the areas of trade and economy: “A significant reform process is underway on economic diversification in Azerbaijan. The conference aims to discuss lessons on institutional building activities and build future activities. Azerbaijani state agencies show great interest in “twinning” projects”.
Mard said that Azerbaijan is a leader in the space of the Eastern Partnership for number of twinning projects: “25 projects have been completed. Projects on consumers’ protection, superiority of law, support to parliament gave good results. EU countries share their experience with Azerbaijan. The technical assistance and information exchange is significant”.
