Baku. Turbat Baghirova – APA. Before the sovietization of the region, the population of Yerevan, Armenian’s current capital, was predominantly Azerbaijani. They were forced to leave their homes as a result of systematic deportations, Azerbaijani Deputy FM Khalaf Khalafov said in his speech at the meeting on Azerbaijan of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on Wednesday.

“Hundreds died, mostly of hunger and thirst on the roads. As a consequence of Armenia’s policy, not a single Azerbaijani has remained in Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven adjacent districts. I would like to mention the Khojaly genocide. Back in 1992, a town (Khojaly) was wiped off the face of earth in 24 hours. The elderly, women, and children were massacred, simply for being Azerbaijani. That's the result of Armenia’s ethnic cleansing policy against Azerbaijan. Starting from school, they raise their children in hostility towards Azerbaijan,” he said.

The deputy minister said the Armenian population too is suffering from the conflict, adding that half the population has already left Armenia.

“…because Armenia has occupied Azerbaijani lands and is now making territorial claims against its neighbors, especially Turkey and Georgia,” he stressed.
