Azerbaijan, Iran lay foundation for railway bridge

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by co-chairmen of Azerbaijan-Iran State Commission on economic, commercial and humanitarian spheres Azerbaijani Economic Minister Shahin Mustafayev and Iran’s Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Mahmud Vaezi, as well as officials of Azerbaijani and Iranian relevant bodies.

Mustafayev and head of Azerbaijan Railways Javid Gurbanov reviewed the works carried out in the 8.3 km-line from Astara railway station to Iranian border.

Mustafayev stressed Azerbaijan-Iran relations developed in all spheres. He noted that political wills of the president, as well as mutual visits and meetings play an important role in the development of the relations: “Azerbaijani President’s visit to Iran on February 23 and documents signed within this visit are very significant in the development of our relations. Azerbaijan and Iran cooperate within North-South international transport corridor. It’s planned to carry out transportations to Russia and Europe and vice-verse via this corridor. It’s forecasted to transport 5 mln tonnes of cargos for the first stage, 10 mln tonnes for next stages”.

The Minister noted that this railway bridge will increase cargo turnover between our countries. Width of the railway bridge will make 10 m, length 82 m.

Azerbaijan and Iran will equally provide funding.

Construction of the bridge is planned to be completed by end of 2016.

Iranian Minister said that the railway bridge over Astara River will play an important role for the development of economic and commercial links between Azerbaijan and Iran, especially expansion of cooperation in cargo transportation.
