Top Azerbaijani official: UN, int’l community still unable to fully support search for truth

He made the remarks Feb. 17 at the presentation of the film “AtəşkÉ™s (Ceasefire)” in Baku.

Hasanov noted that work in this area has been intensive for the last five years.

“The truth about the Khojaly events is being conveyed to the world community by state authorities, also as part of the international awareness campaign “Justice for Khojaly”, initiated by Leyla Aliyeva, the vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. We try to let the world know what happened in Khojaly on 26 February 1992 and what the motivation behind the genocide was.” he said.

The top official emphasized that the people of Azerbaijan faced ethnic cleansing and responsible for it all are some persons, including the Armenian president, who currently rules Armenia and a group who launched a movement of ethnic separatism in the South Caucasus and consequently caused mischief in the whole post-Soviet area, putting nations against each other.

“That is not to say that by conveying these realities to the world community we are trying to awaken hatred in Azerbaijan and in the world against the people of Armenia. We still do not regard the people of Armenia as our enemy. But we do want to introduce to the world certain criminals who came to power in Armenia. The Armenian people themselves too have enough suffered from them,” he added.

He recalled that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly raised on the international arena the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its consequences. “The head of state brought to the world community the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani lands and the fact that Armenia, in defiance of the civilized world, continues to stand against the will of the humanity,” Hasanov noted.

The UN four resolutions on the liberation of Azerbaijan’s occupied territories are still ignored by Armenia, the top official said. “What it means is that: the UN and the world community are still unable to support the search for truth; the UN is still unable to fully fulfill its functions and improve to the desired extent the world administration system of peoples and states which are based on confidence in this organization; the Minsk Group, established with the direct involvement of the UN, fails to assess justice and injustice properly demonstrating a double-standard attitude towards the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. As a result of all of this, it has been unable for 24 years to eliminate the consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh tragedy, repatriate Azerbaijani citizens expelled form their native lands and achieve peace in the South Caucasus. The consequences of this [Nagorno-Karabakh tragedy] affect the region, Europe and the entire world,” said Hasanov.

In addition, the top official stressed the importance of bringing to the world community realities and what happened in the South Caucasus over the last 25 years which will be able to contribute to preventing reoccurrence of such events in the future.
