Sustainable Development Goals Fund distorts Azerbaijani geographical names

The International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) sent a letter to SDG Fund Director Paloma Duran and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark, expressing protest over the distortion of the Azerbaijani geographical names, the IEPF told APA.

According to the letter, SDG Fund’s changing the names of Armenian-occupied Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions with Armenian names in its official website is wrong from the point of view of international law and human values. (http://www.sdgfund.org/current-programmes)

“Changing the name of Armenian-occupied Jabrayil district, an ancient Azerbaijani land, which even in Soviet times was not an administrative unit of Nagorno-Karabakh, as Dzhrakan, Zangilan as Kovsakan, as well as the names of villages and settlements located in the districts of Khojaly and Askeran of Nagorno-Karabakh region justify the fact of occupation,” said the letter.

The IEPF sait it considers a priority the UN’s strategy on sustainable development and preservation of peace in the world, its various resolutions and principles.

“The UN has given a legal assessment of the conflict by adopting four resolutions (822, 853, 874, 884) demanding the withdrawal of the occupying Armenian armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts and the return of the refugees to their homes. But turning a blind eye to the presentation of the occupied areas in Armenian would mean to justify the violation of the rights of about a million refugees. On top of the ruined infrastructure, deployment of illegal armed groups, and vandalistic destruction of cultural-historical heritage, Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding Azerbaijani districts currently under occupation are now facing the Armenianization of residential areas and historical monuments. From this point of view, we are asking you to correct the errors in the digital map presented by the reputable UN organization so that the falsification of the names of historical and geographical territories that have been home to a people for centuries would be prevented,” the letter said.
