Moscow. Farid Akbarov – APA. In 2014, the trade turnover between Russia and Azerbaijan increased by 12 percent and reached a historic maximum of $4 billion, which is one the highest figures among CIS countries, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who also co-chairs the Russia-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission.

He made remarks on Friday at the 15th meeting of Russia-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission in Moscow.

The deputy PM said bilateral relations between the two countries stand at the highest level.

“The rapid development of fruitful cooperation in the commercial, political and humanitarian spheres corresponds to the strategic interests of both countries,” he added.

Rogozin said the meeting’s agenda includes issues of Russia-Azerbaijan cooperation and mutual activities in the energy, industrial, agricultural and other sectors.

According to the deputy PM, the volume of mutual trade turnover between Russia and Azerbaijan has grown more than twice since 2009.

“Among CIS countries, Azerbaijan ranks 4th after Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan in terms of trade turnover with Russia. And Russia comes 3rd following Italy and Germany in terms of trade turnover with Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, over the first seven months of this year, the volume of trade turnover has reduced to 1.7 billion – 23.2% decrease – due to objective reasons. I think we will be thoroughly discussing this matter in detail at today’s meeting,” he said.

Rogozin added that trade between Russia and Azerbaijan mostly relies on industrial and agricultural products. Russia mainly exports agricultural and machine building products to Azerbaijan, and imports agricultural products from Azerbaijan.

“The energy sector is an important aspect in bilateral relations. Russia’s oil companies operate successfully in Azerbaijan and they are interested in deepening interaction with the Azerbaijani side. For this interaction to intensify, we have created a high-level bilateral energy group,” the deputy PM completed.
