Azerbaijan tightening control over dissemination of religious info

Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloglu – APA. Amendments to the laws on religious freedom and media outlets were discussed at the parliament’s plenary meeting on Tuesday.

The amendments pertain to the tightening of control over dissemination of religious information in Azerbaijan and preparation of specialists on religion.

According to the proposed amendment to Article 29 of the law on religious freedom, from now on an executive power will get information on religious activity and financial reports from religious centers and offices. Note that, according to the current law executive power get necessary information from religious centers and offices.

Two more amendments are proposed to be made to the same article. According to them, an executive power will, in accordance with the law on the regulation of inspections in the area of entrepreneurship and the protection of entrepreneur interests, conduct inspections in shopping centers specialized in the sales of religious books, audio and video materials, and products labeled with control marks. Furthermore, actions will be taken to prepare and religious specialists and qualification courses will be arranged.

The proposed amendment to Article 14 of the law on mass media outlets is that a reference from the related executive power will be required for the establishment of a religious publication house.

Note that, the State Committee on Religious Organizations conducts most of the control on religious affairs in Azerbaijan and the new amendments will add to the powers to the state committee.

The amendments were put to the vote and approved.
