The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 70th jubilee session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a report.

"Minister Lavrov and Secretary General Ban exchanged detailed opinions on the dynamics of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa in the context of a growing threat from the Islamic State groping," it said. "Lavrov stressed the importance of pooling the efforts of the Syrian government, the sound sections of the opposition and main regional and international actors in rebuffing the global threat put up by the IS."

"The Russian side reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate with all the parties for assisting the regional states in the solution of problems,"

"The minister also pointed out the inefficiency of unilateral steps in the sphere of counteraction to terrorism," it said.

In the course of the conversation, attention was focused on the tasks of providing political backup to the efforts to eliminate the internal conflicts, in part, in Libya, Yemen and Ukraine.

"Sergei Lavrov and Ban Ki-moon also considered preparations for an international conference on climate that will be held in Paris in December," the report said.
