Baku. Turbat Baghirova – APA. Australia will accept additional 12,000 refugees from Syria on top of its current humanitarian intake quota of 13,750 refugees, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Wednesday, APA reported citing Milliyyet.
The government is also set to provide $44m extra for the UN refugee agency and other agencies, with a focus on assisting the situation with 240,000 Syrian refugees settled in camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
“Destroying this death cult is essential, not just to ending the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East but also to ending the threat to Australia and the wider world. This is very much in Australia’s national interest,” said Tony Abbott.
Note that, government decision can enter into force after being approved by the parliament.
