"These surveillance flights will determine what action can be taken when the time comes," said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Tuesday. The surveillance forays were also confirmed by the French military.

French President Francois Hollande announced on Monday the mission’s commencement, stating, “What we want is to know what is being prepared against us and what is being done against the Syrian population.”

France has already participated in the attacks staged by the so-called US-led coalition against purported ISIL positions in Iraq but had ruled out any such operations in Syria.

Syria has been facing a foreign-backed militancy – including by Takfiri terrorists – since 2011. Some 240,000 Syrians have been killed in the violence.
