Baku. Malahat Najafova – APA. Paul Salopek, a National Geographic fellow and a US citizen, has sent a letter of appeal to the Azerbaijan government, asking to remove his name from the list of undesired persons, the Foreign Ministry’s press service told APA on Sept.4.

Salopek says in the letter that he respects Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, and its laws, noting that he has visited the Armenian-occupied Azerbaijani territories unknowingly and without having information of the consequences of his visit, the ministry noted.

“He has stressed that this visit cannot be interpreted as disrespect for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Expressing his regret, Paul Salopek states that his visit to the Armenian-occupied Azerbaijani territories could no way serve promotion of the illegal regime created in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories. He apologized to the Azerbaijani government and the people of Azerbaijan, and promised to avoid such visits to occupied territories in future. Paul’s letter was considered in a relevant manner. His name has been removed from the list of undesired persons and he has been granted permission to make a trip to Azerbaijan as part of the Out of Eden Walk project that serves to learn the movement route of ancient people through pedestrian tours,” said the ministry.
