Baku. Agha Jafarli – APA. Today in Geneva, the International Campaign to Ban Anti-Personnel Mines (ICBL) - the coalition against cluster munitions (Cluster Munition Monitor 2015) presented the 2015 report on cluster munitions.

Director of Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmine Public Union Hafiz Safikhanov told APA that the report points out that the problem of cluster munitions in the territory of Azerbaijan has emerged as a result of the war launched by Armenia, and that as a result of active combat operations in the territory of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast and seven adjacent districts, these lands were crammed with unexploded ordnance.

In addition, the former military fields and exploded ammunition depots pose a serious problem for Azerbaijan today. At present, there are several such territorial areas such as Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyeva village in Sumgait, in Guzdek in Jeyranchol where large amounts of UXOs were unearthed. Bombs left over from the Soviet army were discovered in the Samukh region. They pose a danger to the population.

According to official information, Azerbaijan accepts the provisions of the Convention but is cannot join it because part of its territory is occupied by Armenian armed forces. On the other hand, none of neighboring countries, including Armenia, has joined the Convention yet. In some areas, experts are working to clear the area of mines. In Azerbaijan, there have been no facts of production, storage, transport or use of cluster weapons.
