Baku. Shahriyar Alizade – APA. Baku Court of Grave Crimes has today held a hearing on the case of Khadija Ismayilova.
Ismayilova’s lawyer Fariz Namazli petitioned the court to renew the investigation. He said the public prosecutor made mistakes and distorted witnesses’ testimonies.
The public prosecutor Ramazan Hadiyev said calling for renewal of investigation is merely aimed at extending the process, calling the petition groundless.
The judges denied the petition.
Thereafter, Fariz Namazli and Khadija Ismayilova’s other lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev made speech and required judgment of acquittal.
They called for the acquittal for Khadija Ismayilova.
Ramazan Hadiyev said in response the criminal case has been investigated. “This is not a place for scientific discussion. Concrete evidence and its assessment are considered here. I think none of the lawyers were able to deny the pieces of evidence I gave,” said Ramazan Hadiyev.
Khadija Ismayilova was then given the floor. She said she would like to look through court protocols and asked for a week away from court.
The lawyer said court protocols can only be reviewed once the process is completely over.
The process will resume on August 31.
Note that, prosecutor Ramazan Hadiyev said in the previous hearing that Khadija Ismayilova’s guilt on the articles she is charged with were proved during the judicial investigation. He asked for 9-year imprisonment for Khadija Ismayilova.
Note that, the Prosecutor General’s Office issued a statement on the arrest of Khadija Ismayilova that the Sabail District Prosecutor’s Office has launched a criminal case under the Criminal Code’s article #125 (bringing to suicide) regarding Tural Mustafayev, a reporter for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Meydan TV Television and Radio Company, for making a suicide attempt by swallowing zinc oxide in Seaside Park on October 20.
T. Mustafayev appealed to the General Prosecutor’s Office to ask for measures against Khadija Ismayilova, with whom he had close relationship for a long time, for bringing him to suicide by prosecuting and exerting pressure on him, insulting his honor and dignity throughout the period he worked there.
On December 5, the Sabail District Court sentenced Khadija Ismayilova to two-month pre-trial detention. The term was extended for several times.
Then, an investigative authority has brought new charges against Khadija Ismayilova under the Criminal Code’s articles 179.3.2 (assignment or waste in large size), 192.2.2 (illegal business), 213.1 (tax evasion) and 308.2 (abuse of official powers).
