"Preliminary data received from Malian officials and UN mission in Mali [MINUSMA] suggests that four Ukrainian citizens were seized (inside the hotel) and one of them died," the report said. "One Ukrainian managed to escape and he is staying on a MINUSMA in the region of Mopti."

Another two Ukrainians were freed during an antiterrorist operation. They have been taken to a secure place.

Earlier on Saturday, the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric told TASS a Russian, a Ukrainian, and two citizens of the South African Republic had been freed from the seized hotel.

On Friday, a group of militants attacked hotel Byblos in Sevare where foreigners working for MINUSMA were lodged. International media say thirteen people, including several Malian governmental servicemen died in the course of the operation to force the militants out of the hotel.
