Azerbaijani border guards prevent smuggling attempt by sea

In June of this year, border guards detained a group of criminals attempting to carry smuggled products into Azerbaijan by sea. On 19 June 2015, according to information that smuggled products would be brought from Russia by sea through the area of the SBS “Muqtadir” coastal checkpoint, the coastal zone was closed and a border guard ship began to conduct surveillance on the area. In an operation carried out on 20 June 2015 around 1:00 AM, a group of eight persons carrying on a motor boat 804 kg sturgeon, 7kg smoked fish and 2.4 kg black caviar were detained.

On 29 June 2015 around 09:30 AM, during the documentation of a fishing boat, which was back from the sea, as the actions of two crew members arouse suspicion, the boat was thoroughly inspected in the coastal surveillance station and a secret compartment was found in the front and middle parts of the boat. During the inspection of the secret compartment, 36 packages with a total of 1,550 grams of dried marijuana, 4,600 boxes of Kent cigarettes, 2,000 boxes of MM cigarettes, 5,970 convoluted Altra-200 medicines, 15 Samsung-Galaxy mobile phones were found and seized. The initial investigation revealed that the smuggled goods were brought by a gang from Iran by sea.

Criminal cases have been launched on both facts, investigation is underway.
