Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli made the remarks at the plenary session on “Countering violent extremism: the role of religious leaders in promoting religious pluralism and advancing shared well-being” held within the 3rd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue that kicked off in Baku on Monday.

The committee chairman said that people are not only fighting under the guise of the religion, but also fighting within their own separate religions. He said a special attention should be paid to the religious enlightenment and education, adding that ignorance and illiteracy cause extremism and its consequences.

Gurbanli noted that today, Azerbaijan can be an example of religious tolerance and separate offshoots of religious movements are freely operating in the country.

“States should not discriminate against any religion. Our state provides assistance to various religious communities from the state budget every year. 96% of the Azerbaijani population is Muslim, only 4% is the representatives of different religions. However, the necessary conditions were created for all religions,” he added.
