Baku - APA-Economics. The European Commission (EC) has offered Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to update the memorandum of understanding on construction of Trans-Caspian pipeline, Vice President of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič told "Kommersant" newspaper.

“The European Commission has a mandate since 2011 to conduct negotiations with Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan within the framework of a memorandum of understanding on construction of the Trans-Caspian pipeline. Now we’ve offered Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to update this memorandum and are waiting for an answer and how the negotiations will be conducted”, he said.

Moreover, the EC vice-President noted that within the framework of the Southern Gas Corridor, gas supply from Iraq and Iran can be possible.

"Currently, the matter is about Azerbaijan… but we'll observe the processes in the neighbouring countries in connection with recent diplomatic progress in Iraq and Iran. We also see that Turkmenistan’s interest in this sphere increased", - Šefčovič says.

The Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline project is purposed to transport natural gas from the eastern fields of Turkmenistan to Turkey's Erzurum and Europe.
