Head of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov made the remarks on Thursday during the 4th International Security Conference in Moscow, APA’s Moscow correspondent reported.

He said that since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the conflicts between Moldova and Moldovan Republic of Transnistria, Georgia and Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the status of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region have remained unresolved.

“The deterioration of Russia's relations with the US and Europe is likely to reignite the conflicts in the post-Soviet space. There is a threat of resumption of armed conflicts near the state borders,” Gerasimov noted.

The head of the General Staff also said today, the Georgian authorities express their intention of annexing Abkhazia and South Ossetia by force.

“Chisinau is demanding the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria with the support of "new" Ukraine and continue maintaining an economic embargo on unrecognized republic. All of these increase the tension in those regions. It is important for us to take measures in this regard,” he added.
