The two leaders reviewed the train and equip program for vetted members of moderate Syrian opposition fighters, according to a White House readout of the call.

Efforts to "deepen cooperation to stem the flow of foreign fighters," were also discussed and the "president appreciated positive efforts in Turkey on this issue."

They also discussed the latest developments in Yemen and Ukraine and Iran’s nuclear program negotiations. They pledged to continue to work closely on those and other regional issues, the White House said.

Obama expressed appreciation for Turkey’s continued support of nearly 2 million refugees from Syria at a cost of more than $5.5 billion to host the refugees.
