Baku – APA. Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov met with newly-appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta on March 4, the State Committee told APA.

Hasanov said that Azerbaijan has always had good relations with the United States and these relations are developing today.

The Committee chairman informed the Ambassador about the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, history of the problem and situation of refugees and IDPs in the country.

He said that Armenia is unable to pursue an independent policy today. Hands of current rulers of this country are stained with blood of the Azerbaijanis. Therefore, this regime doesn’t accept the return of the lands through the peace agreement. So the OSCE Minsk Group can’t yield any results.

Speaking about the Azerbaijan-US relations, Cekuta said that his purpose is to contribute to the development of relations between the two friendly countries.

The diplomat said the U.S. seriously approaches the solution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and makes efforts for a peaceful resolution of the problem.

“We are concerned over the recent escalation of tension on the frontline. The sides should refrain from the steps that lead to aggravation of the situation. In our turn, we try to achieve progress in the resolution of the conflict working either with the Azerbaijani side or the Armenian side”, he said.

The ambassador said that the US government has provided Azerbaijan with humanitarian aid in the amount of $115 million for 20 years to assist the people suffering from the conflict. The total amount of the assistance in the field of security is approximately $53 million and this amount was allocated for fight against terrorism, training and other purposes.

The sides exchanged views on several issues of mutual interest.

Following this, the Ambassador familiarized himself with the condition in the block built for 760 IDP families in Masazir settlement of Absheron district and met with internally displaced persons.
