Witnesses saw the sky lit up by the explosion, some nearby living residents had their windows broken by the blast’s shockwave and many others felt the ground shake. Some said they saw the “mushroom cloud” near the Donetsk railway station, and one said many houses were shaking “like an earthquake.” People in Makeyevka and Avdeyevka said they could hear the explosion.

Right-wing politician Dmitry Yarosh said the blast killed about “200 terrorists,” destroyed 20 Grad rockets, and blew up trucks filled with ammunition.

Ukrainian military deployed multiple rocket system Smerch (the BM-30 Tornado) to shell the area in the city, Boris Filatov, former deputy head of the industrial Dnepropetrovsk Region and a member of the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada), said on his Facebook page. According to Filatov, the men who fired the missiles “do not know what they hit because they were shooting based on coordinates.”

The separatists also confirmed the fact. They announced that an explosion occurred at a chemical factory: “There is no threat of chemicals release into the environment after the explosion caused by Ukrainian artillery. The fire was extinguished,"- said the separatists.
