Baku. Shahriyar Alizada – APA. In Islamic countries, there are some radical groups that are trying to discredit Islam. They operate under various names and are contrary to Islam. There are funded from abroad, from Christian countries.

This was stated by Mubariz Gurbanli, Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, during an event on religion-state relations held at prison 6 of the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service, APA reports.

He noted that these groups are trying to belittle Islam.

“They’re discrediting Islam in order to curb the flow of converts to Islam. Today there’s a group called ISIS. But it had previously operated under a different name. ISIS was made of the groups wanting to label Islam as “terrorism”. These fights have nothing to with religion. With their actions, they are seeking to vilify Islam. A Japanese or Englishman, after seeing someone with long beard, messy hair, beheading people and killing children, would of course stay away from Islam. The wars that took place during the 14 years of the 20th century have killed 1,200,000 people, 80% of whom were Muslims. There are ongoing wars in 30 countries. 12 of them are going on in Islamic countries,” he said.

M. Gurbanli noted that radical groups want to root themselves in Azerbaijan as well: “But the Azerbaijani people will never offer them support. First, our nature cannot allow that. Second, our Islamic traditions come from history. Our belief is true. We cannot justify non-Islamic deeds and never will”.

The committee chairman also said the fight against radical groups will continue.

“There’s freedom of religion in Azerbaijan. There are 2,050 mosques in the country. 1,600 of them offer full service. For the Eid prayers, up to 150,000 people come to mosques. However, our mosques have the capacity of 300,000 people. Some young people today are taken abroad with their passports seized and forced to work as slaves. Then they’re given weapons and sent to death. A number of such people were put under surveillance and some arrested. The rest of them will be arrested, too. We have made an amendment to the law. Whoever illegally participates in a battle somewhere or becomes a member of any armed group gets arrested upon their return to the homeland. If anyone really wants to fight for the homeland or in the cause of religion, there’s a field for that. We have a problem like Karabakh. So it’s not worth joining a gang, dying for their interests. That is why those who preach these things have to be prevented and they are. Some are talking about tales of establishing a Shariah-ruled state. They want to bring the Shariah law. But is anyone ready to live under the Shariah law? Azerbaijan’s society is secular. If we live under the Shariah law, then we have to cut off the hands of the thief. No one would want to be punished in accordance with the Shariah law for their crimes. No one would want to be stoned to death. But these bearded people and fanatics call for this. If you want to impose these same laws on them, they would refuse,” he concluded.
