Baku – APA. Istanbul has hosted today the U.S. Atlantic Council Energy and Economic Summit. APA, citing Turkish new agencies, reports that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu also attended the summit.

Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu spoke in his speech about a three-direction analysis. He noted the first direction as the humanitarian side of the issue: Today one-fifths of the world’s population is unable to use energy. For instance, when I went to Somalia 3 years ago I personally witnessed how the vital need energy is. For Turkey, energy is an issue of enhancing the living standards of our people. Energy security is part of stability and ensures stability and humanitarian life standards for democratic societies”.

The prime minister said the second side of the issue is the economic direction: “As Turkey, our advantage is that we possess a very hard-working, brave, initiative human potential and an important geography. And our weak side is our independence on energy and the budget deficit that results from it. We want to diversify our energy sources. We’re seriously working on nuclear energy and renewable energy.

As the third side of the issue, Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu drew attention to the strategic direction: “Mr. Biden also expressed, what is the energy an instrument for? If the energy is used for political pressure, no side will gain. Producers and consumers have same interests. Therefore, we have to be sensible of being in the same boat. We must see energy as a means of development. Geopolitics, geoeconomics and geoenergy. These are important for Turkey. We want two things around us: stability and confidence. There is nothing important for Turkey except stability. Unstability in Syria, Iraq, Caucasus, Ukraine and Yemen had negative impact on Turkey. Unstability and terror around us threat Turkey”.

A.DavutoÄŸlu mentioned that the Caucasus and the Balkans were known as unstable regions in the 1990s: “Now, thanks to TANAP, these regions have begun to be remembered as regions of peace. The Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict zone is another place where energy can be used on peaceful purposes. No one had believed in Baku-Ceyhan, but this project was realized. But Armenia was left out of the project. Why? Because it has 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands under occupation. The country which will be the most pleased with relations that would be built between Azerbaijan and Armenia is Turkey. Azerbaijan today is a country that has reached economic welfare. Armenia also can be a participant of peace projects, and that needs political will. We’re hoping that the escalation come about after the helicopter incident will be reduced by the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group”.
