Azerbaijan is a secular country and all the momentous days, including Ramadan and Eid al-Adha in Islamic world as holidays are marked in the country where 96 percent of its population is Muslim.

The Chairman of the Committee said that if Azerbaijan includes the Day of Ashura in this list, it will cause some kind of discrimination against other religious sects in the country.

“Fore example, Iran is a country where Shiites live in. However, 60 percent of Azerbaijan’s population is Shiites. The government doesn’t want to demonstrate discrimination in this matter. Anyway, people visit mosques and celebrate the Day of Ashura. The Caucasian Muslims Office also issues fatwa. There is no need for the government’s any intervention in this matter.
