Baku – APA. Geomagnetic storm suddenly hit the Earth today, Elchin Babayev, deputy director of Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory named after Nasiraddin Tusi, told APA.

He said that Kp levels reached 5 (maximum 9). “Geomagnetic storms were rated on a scale of G1 early today.”

Babayev said that fluctuations in the interplanetary magnetic field caused the geomagnetic storm: “The charged particles and solar wind were directed into the atmosphere by the Earth's magnetosphere.”

Geomagnetic disturbance is expected to continue throughout the day. Citizens of some countries have already observed northern lights.

75 passive sunspots were seen on the surface of the Sun. No coronal hole was observed.
